H & H Chinese Cresteds believes in performing genetic health testing on all animals intended for breeding before
producing a litter. Though Chinese Crested dogs are generaly healthy as a whole, predisposition to certain genetic diseases
exisits in EVERY breed and Chinese Cresteds are no exception
In Chinese Cresteds, the most commonly diagnosed genetic diseases are PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy, a genetic eye
disease that causes blindness) Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease (a disease that causes bone cell death and deformation of the femoral
head - the ball of the hip joint) Patellar Luxation (slipping of the knee cap due to an overly shallow knee joint - a condition
common to many toy breeds) and closed ear canals (which causes deafness)
Though testing of parent animals is not a gurantee that no genetic diseases will occur in offspring, it certainly helps
to reduce the chances of passing on genetic diease to future generation. There is never an acceptable excuse for a breeder
not to perform genetic testing! Breeders who do not test parent animals are NOT BREEDING RESPONSIBLY!
